Asset Loader

Asset Loader provides PHP utilities for developers building WordPress themes or plugins with Webpack. It handles the registration and enqueuing of bundled script and style assets, supporting both wp-scripts-generated builds and custom Webpack configurations that output a JSON asset manifest.

• Script Asset API (wp-scripts): Automatically reads dependencies and version information from .asset.php files. Use enqueue_script_asset() to register and enqueue a bundle in one call, with optional additional dependencies.
• Manifest Asset API (custom Webpack): For projects using a custom Webpack config that outputs a JSON manifest. Functions register_manifest_asset() and enqueue_manifest_asset() resolve asset URIs from a running DevServer or local file paths on disk.
• Block Extensions API: Attach additional scripts and styles to an already-registered block type (core or third-party) via a block.json file, without registering a new block. Use register_block_extension() to extend existing blocks.
• Flexible dependency management: Pass extra script handles as dependencies beyond those declared in the asset file, giving you control over load order.
• Supports both editor and frontend contexts: Enqueue assets specifically for the block editor, the frontend, or both, using standard WordPress hooks like enqueue_block_editor_assets and wp_enqueue_scripts.
