Underscores is a starter theme for developers who want to build custom sites without starting from scratch. It provides a minimal, well-organized foundation with clean HTML5 templates and modern code practices.

  • Lean HTML5 templates: Each template is concise and well-commented, making it easy to understand and modify.
  • Responsive navigation: A built-in JavaScript script turns menus into toggled dropdowns on small screens, ready for your own CSS styling.
  • Sample custom header: An optional custom header implementation in inc/custom-header.php gives you a starting point for header customization.
  • Custom template tags: The inc/template-tags.php file includes reusable tags that keep your templates clean and prevent code duplication.
  • Two sample CSS layouts: The layouts/ folder contains CSS for a sidebar on either side of your content, helping you quickly set up common page structures.

Underscores is licensed under GPLv2 or later, so you can use it to build and distribute your own themes freely. It is not meant to be used as a parent theme; instead, you hack it directly to create your own unique design.
