Underscores (_s) is a starter theme designed for building custom themes. It offers a minimal, hackable foundation with modern best practices, perfect for developers who want full control without starting from scratch. The theme includes clean, well-commented HTML5 templates and CSS that can be easily extended.

  • Lean HTML5 templates: A just-right amount of modern templates with helpful comments, including a 404 template and sample custom header implementation.
  • Custom template tags: Functions in inc/template-tags.php keep your templates clean and reduce code duplication.
  • Responsive navigation: A script at js/navigation.js turns menus into toggled dropdowns on small screens, ready for CSS styling.
  • Sample layouts: Two CSS layouts in layouts/ for sidebar on either side of content, giving you a starting point for your design.
  • WooCommerce boilerplate: Optionally include WooCommerce support when generating your theme.
  • _sassify option: If you prefer Sass, select the _sassify checkbox to get .scss files instead of plain CSS.
