Unique Media File Folders

Unique Media File Folders changes how uploaded media files are organized on your site. Instead of using the default date-based folder structure (e.g., /2019/01/) or dumping all files into a single folder, this plugin assigns each uploaded file its own randomly generated folder. This solves two common problems: file name conflicts when reusing content and performance degradation on filesystems like EXT4 when too many files accumulate in one directory.

• Random folder names per file: Each upload gets a unique folder generated from a UUID4, encoded to use only alphanumeric characters (a-z, 0-9). This eliminates the risk of two files having the same path, even if they share the same filename.
• Customizable folder depth: By default, each file gets its own folder. You can increase folder depth using the umff_folder_depth filter. For example, a depth of 4 creates subfolders like /c/n/k/3nae60p6f3e942b4cpvm8q/photo.jpg, distributing files across more directories for better filesystem performance.
• Simple installation and activation: Download the plugin, unzip it into your plugins directory, and activate it from the Plugins page. No configuration is required to start using random folders immediately.
• Open source and extensible: The plugin is hosted on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. Developers can inspect the code, contribute improvements, or adapt the folder generation logic to fit custom workflows.
