This utility class formats WordPress theme menus with the correct HTML syntax and CSS classes required for Bootstrap 4 dropdown navigation. It is designed for theme developers who want to integrate Bootstrap's navigation components without manually rewriting menu markup.

  • Bootstrap 4 and 3 support: The main branch works with Bootstrap 4. A separate v3-branch is maintained for projects still using Bootstrap 3.
  • WordPress.org theme compliant: The walker meets all Theme Review guidelines for submission to the official theme directory. No modifications are needed for compliance.
  • Icon and link modifier support: Add Glyphicons, Font Awesome, or other icon classes directly in the menu item's CSS Classes field. Disabled links, dropdown headers, dropdown dividers, and icon-only items are all supported through the same input.
  • Simple installation: Place the single class file in your theme folder, add a few lines to functions.php, and update your wp_nav_menu() call to use the new walker. No external dependencies beyond Bootstrap's own CSS and JS files.
  • Customizer shortcut fix: A documented workaround allows the menu edit shortcut to appear in the Customizer preview by passing the class name as a string instead of an instance, then re-instantiating via a filter.
